Lahoal is an industrial enclave, 12 Km away from Dibrugarh Town and surrounded by a large number of villages, tea gardens and paddy fields. Majority of common folk of this area basically depend upon agriculture and rest on daily wage for livelihood. Earlier, the students of this area used to go outside Lahoal for higher education, but it was hardly possible to for the students of far remote villages to study at the urban colleges due to their poor economic background and poor communication network. However, due to explosion and expansion of higher education towards the end of 20th century, the need to create a new atmosphere and institution was increasingly felt. The overwhelming situation also demanded to establish a full-fledged degree college at Lahoal.
In the historic meeting held on the 24th November ,1994 at the premises of Lahoal L.P. school, on the great humble suggestion and advice from the eminent educationalists, the discussion was taken to open a college on the name of ‘’Lahowal College’’ from the ensuing academic session. On 17th july,1995 college was formally inaugurated by the eminent educationalist Dr. B.N. Bhattacharya. Classes for H.S. 1st year Arts started on 17th July 1995 in the morning hours in Lahoal Girl’s High School. Later, the classes were shifted to the newly built own building which was started in 1996. It was at the point of time that the generous donation from general public, different company’s welfare schemes and non-government organisations, offered heartiestly towards the college helped to shape the present permanent building.
In a nutshell, college was established to import and promote both theoretical and need based technical/applied education. The college is co-educational institute imparting higher education in Arts & commerce stream from Higher Secondary to Degree level with well-equipped computer education. The college bloomed in offering H.S. classes for commerce in the year 2008 and for the subsequent year’s classes for H.S. Science were also offered. Under the deliberate hardship of the college authority in 2012, the college was permitted temporary affiliation from Dibrugarh University to undertake B.A. / B.Com. programmes. In the same year the college takes pride in inaugurating technical education as per the permission obtained from the Director of Employment and Craft man training under SCVT, Govt of Assam. Simultaneously, NCVT short term MES courses was also included.
On 31st January, 2014 a red letter day of Lahowal College. Honourable Chief Minister of Assam Sjt. Tarun Gogoi inaugurated our 100 capacity computer lab. Meanwhile with the digitalization of the whole world, new pattern of examination is introduced for students. To meet this need and to enhanced the competitive skill among youths, Lahowal College in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) adds another 1000 computers to the another new lab to facilitate All India Online Examination.
Moreover, with a view to upgrade and develop the technical skill of the students, the college itself organises job oriented vocational training programme from time to time as a part of college education. The college has arranged vocational training in regular intervals in time on different non-academic subjects in order to motivate and mobilise the educated youths and to develop a work culture among them. We deeply realize that the vocational education has a tremendous potentiality in such an ongoing semi-industrial area like Lahoal, comprising SC/ST/TGL and other Backward Classes and Communities.
When the whole world has accepted, then we too think that it would be better to us to put equal foot to adhere ourselves to these particular ideological terms-
